 The Giant Schnauzer is a separate breed from the Miniature and Standard Schnauzer. They originated in Germany and were bred as multi-purpose farm dogs used to drive sheep and cattle to market and to guard property. The breed was not that well known until World War I when it was used for police training. The Giant Schnauzer is recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1930 and the United Kennel Club in 1948.

The Giant Schnauzer is a larger more powerful version of the smaller Standard Schnauzer. They are ruggedly built with a dense, weather-resistant coat that is black, white, silver or salt and pepper in color.

The Giant Schnauzer is good natured, even tempered and very loyal to his family. Giants excel in search and rescue, obedience, agility and herding. They are intelligent, easily trained, robust and have a natural resistance to disease which makes them ideally suited to be a companion, utility and working dog. They have earned their reputation as a handsome, intelligent and versatile working dog.
